Our story

Made to be treasured

Sterling silver, gold-plated and gemstone jewellery, designed in Chelmsford, Essex: earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings, sketched by hand, refined in CAD, cast and finished by hand.

Why “Amber”?

A name that keeps beautiful things safe

Amber is fossilised tree resin, millions of years old. When it first flowed from ancient trees it caught tiny treasures in its golden glow, a leaf, a seed, a single insect, and held them perfectly for thousands upon thousands of years.

That is what we want our jewellery to do: hold on to the moments that matter. A first pair of earrings, a promise, a birthday, a “thank you”, kept close and worn with love.

And “James”?

Then we imagined her as a person

We pictured Amber James as someone you would know: warm, modern and quietly confident. She wears her huggies every day, stacks her rings without overthinking it, and saves the solitaire for something special. She chooses pieces she loves over pieces that shout.

Every design starts with a simple question: would Amber James wear it, and would she reach for it again and again?

Jewellery that holds on to the moments that matter, just like amber.

Rooted in Essex

A county with a long love of jewellery

Essex has been adorning itself for thousands of years. In Colchester, Roman Britain’s first city, the Fenwick Treasure was found in 2014: gold armlets, earrings and rings hidden beneath a house floor in AD 61 as Boudica’s army approached. In Southend, the Prittlewell Prince was buried around 1,400 years ago with gold foil crosses and a gold belt buckle.

Chelmsford, our home, has been a market town since King John granted its charter in 1199, and became a city in 2012. It is a place of makers and inventors, where Marconi opened the world’s first wireless factory in 1898. We are proud to add our own small chapter to that story.

From sketch to silver

How every piece is made

Our jewellery is made with the lost-wax casting method that jewellers have trusted for centuries, combined with modern CAD precision so every hoop closes perfectly and every stone sits securely.

Pencil sketch of hinged hoop earrings

Sketch

Every design begins as a pencil drawing, exploring shape, proportion and how the piece will sit on the ear, finger or neck.

CAD drawing of a hoop earring with measurements

CAD design

The sketch is rebuilt in 3D CAD to a tenth of a millimetre, so sizes are exact and hinges, clasps and settings are strong.

Wax models of earrings attached to sprues

Wax model

The design is printed and carved in wax, then each model is attached to a central wax “tree”.

Silicone rubber mould used to make wax models

Mould

Rubber moulds let us reproduce our favourite designs faithfully, piece after piece.

Molten metal being poured during lost-wax casting

Casting

The wax melts away and molten metal is poured into the space it leaves behind.

Freshly cast silver earrings cut from the casting tree

Cutting & filing

Each piece is cut from the silver tree and filed by hand to remove every rough edge.

Hand-polishing a sterling silver earring

Polishing

Hand polishing brings out the mirror shine, before gold plating and stone setting where the design needs it.

Final check

Every piece is checked at the bench for fit, finish and sparkle before it is packed for you.
